1 While the band had written the music for "Walk This Way," they were
having difficulty coming up with the lyrics for it. They decided to take a
break and just happened to see the film, Young Frankenstein. In the movie
the legendary British comedian Marty Feldman utters the phrase, "Walk this
way," to the other characters in the scene. Instead of interpreting the
instruction on its face value, meaning simply to follow him, the characters
mimic Feldman's style of walking. Its double entendre amused the band
members and thus became the basis for the chorus. It's no secret that the
term, walk this way, has come to have a sexual connotation thanks to the
thinly-veiled suggestions in lyrics of this song. "Walk This Way" often
competes with "Sweet Emotion" and "Dream On" for the title of Aerosmith's
signature song, being one of the band's most important, influential, and
recognizable songs. The band almost never omits it from their concert
setlist, still performing their classic version of the song to this day. The
song has also long been a staple of rock radio, garnering regular airplay on
classic rock, mainstream rock, and album-oriented rock radio stations. "Walk
This Way" peaked at #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in early 1977. In
addition, it was named the 8th greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1,
is part of the The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock &
Roll list, ranks #336 on Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of
All Time list and Q Magazine placed it at #23 on its list of 100
Greatest Guitar Tracks.
