AlabamaMountain Music Lyrics:
Oh, play me some mountain music
Like grandma and grandpa used to play
Then I’ll float on down the river to a Cajun hideaway
Drift away like Tom Sawyer, ride a raft with ol’ Huck Finn
Take a nap like Rip Van Winkle, daze dreamin’ again
Oh, play me some mountain music
Like grandma and grandpa used to play
Then I’ll float on down the river to a Cajun hideaway
Swim across the river, just to prove that I’m a man
Spend the day bein’ lazy, just bein’ nature’s friend
Climb a long tall hick’ry, bend it over, skinnin’ cats
Playin’ baseball with chert rocks, usin’ sawmill slabs for bats
Play some back-home, come-on music that comes from the heart
Play something with lots of feelin’
’Cause that’s where music has to start
Oh, play me some mountain music
Like grandma and grandpa used to play
Then I’ll float on down the river to a Cajun hideaway, hey hey
Oh play me mountain music
Oh play me mountain music
Oh play me mountain music
Oh play

1 Cajun is an ethnic group living mainly in Louisiana, consisting of the
descendants of Acadian exiles (French-speaking settlers from the French
colonial empire in northeastern North America that included parts of eastern
Quebec, the Maritime provinces, and modern-day New England, stretching as
far south as Philadelphia). Today, Cajuns make up a significant portion of
south Louisiana's population, and have exerted an enormous impact on the
state's culture. Over the years the term has come to encompass all of the south.
2 These are all characters from 19th century American Literature. Tom
Sawyer and Huck Finn were penned by Mark Twain and Rip Van Winkle was a
creation of author Washington Irving.
3 "Mountain Music" was the lead-off single and title track to Alabama's
third album. It reached #1 on both the U.S. and Canadian Country Music
charts. An earlier recording was released in 1979 by a 5-member, all singer,
band called Heritage. The song, a melding of the Southern rock and bluegrass
genres, has been described by country music writers as "a modern country
classic" and a song that "practically defined what country groups have
strived to accomplish." "Mountain Music" is one of the only songs where solo
vocals can prominently be heard from Alabama band members, Teddy Gentry and
Jeff Cook. In the third verse, lead singer Owen trades off lead vocals with
his bandmates.
