Lengthy instrumental intro.
I listened for the familiar sounds,
Of the cars passin' in the street.
But only heard some giggling voice,
And scamperin' little feet.
I listened for the constant hum,
Of the bored and the broken machines.
But only heard happy ticklin' sounds,
Of wind blowin' through the leaves.
Took a deep breath to taste the air,
That hurt as it went down.
But found it sweet and moist with love,
Like nothin' I'd ever found.
So I rose to gaze at the polluted grays,
Of the clouds blackin' out the sky.
((Saw the sun, and everyone))
((Was just as surprised as I.))
Instrumental break.
The heavens had granted one more chance,
To make life on earth (serene.)
An' I felt a teardrop touch my cheek,
I knew it was only a dre-ee-ee-ee-am.
Vocal stylings.
I saw the sun, and everyone
Was just as surprised as I.
(Saw the sun, and everyone)
(Was just as surprised as I.)
Skip Haynes, spoken, over the above four lines repeatedly sung:

Louder:

Short laugh.
I, I saw the sun, (Lord)/and everyone
Was just as surprised as I, yeah."
Ooo-ooo.
Sung:

Aliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah biography
Aliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah were a Chicago-based, rock group who performed from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. Originally from West Allis, Wisconsin, the trio, cosisting of bassist Mitch Aliotta (vocals, drums), Ted Aliotta (vocals, bass), and Skip Haynes ( lead guitar, drums), cut their first album, a self-titled, rather short LP, in 1970. Ted left after the debut album was recorded and was replaced by John Jeremiah (vocals & keyboard). Having a huge "cult" following, and being excellent singers & musicians helped to keep the group alive and motivated and until they broke up in the mid-1980s.
