The Animals House Of The Rising Sun Lyrics:
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
it's been the ruin of many a poor man
And God, I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a hard working man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a working man needs
Is a place to apply his trade
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he draws his pay

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the house of the Rising Sun

Well one put on the shackles
The other put on the chain
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear my ball & chain

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN 2a 2b
Written by: Alan Price & Traditional
Produced by: Mickie Most
Performed by: The Animals 3 4
First released: 5
Single: June 1964 (U.K.), August 1964 (U.S.)
Album: September 1964 (U.S.), October 1964 (U.K.)

1 Ball and chain, as used here, is a phrase that refers to a restraining device that was used
to slow down prisoners, consisting of a heavy, solid, metal ball, attached to a chain, which
is shackled to the leg.

2a Various places in New Orleans, Louisiana, have been proposed as the inspiration for the
song, with varying degrees of plausibility. Only two candidates, however, have historical
documentation as using the name "Rising Sun," both having listings in old city directories.
The first was a small short-lived hotel on Conti Street in the French Quarter in the 1820s.
An excavation and document search in early 2005 found evidence supporting this claim,
including an advertisement with language that may have euphemistically indicated prostitution.
The second was a late 19th-century, "Rising Sun Hall," on the riverfront of the uptown
Carrollton neighborhood, which seems to have been a building owned and used for meetings
of a "Social Aid & Pleasure Club," commonly rented out for dances and functions. Definite
links to gambling or prostitution, if any, are undocumented for either of these buildings,
neither of which still exists.

2b The Animals' rendition of "The House of the Rising Sun," which was a #1 hit in the United
Kingdom, United States, Sweden and Canada, is recognized as one of the classic outputs of the
British Invasion. Writer Lester Bangs, who writes for Rolling Stone magazine, labelled it
"a brilliant rearrangement and a new rendition of an old standard composition." It ranked
#122 on Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. It is also one of
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The RIAA 6 placed it
at #240 on their Songs of the Century list. In 1999 it received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
And besides critical acclaim, it has long since become a staple of oldies and classic rock
radio formats.
