In 1984, Apollonia 6 evolved out of Prince's{1} all-girl trio, Vanity 6,{2} when actress Patricia "Apollonia" Kotero replaced Denise "Vanity" Matthews in 1984, joining existing Vanity 6 members Brenda Bennett and Susie Moonsie.

After a number of disputes with Prince, Vanity (Denise Matthews), the lead singer of Vanity 6, fled the Prince entourage in 1983 to pursue solo endeavors recording with Motown Records and acting in films. She left open an acting position for the role written for her by Prince in his film [Purple Rain.]

With Kotero aboard (and under their new monikers), the three issued the cheekily titled single, "Sex Shooter," in 1984. With all the attention surrounding Prince and his movie, which featured Kotero as the female lead and romantic interest, "Sex Shooter" managed to edge its way onto the lower reaches of the pop charts.
