about Roll 'Em Pete by Big Joe Turner
[ROLL 'EM PETE]{1} Written by: Joe Turner & Pete Johnson Performed by: Big Joe Turner & Pete Johnson{2}{3} First released{4}: Single: 1938 Album: 1956
{1}As 1938 came to a close, Turner and Johnson (see note 2) recorded "Roll 'Em Pete" for the Vocalion label. It is an up-tempo number punctuated by Johnson's crashing piano. Turner would re-record it many times over the decades.
{2}Turner, whose powerful physique certainly matched his vocal might, was a product of the swinging, wide-open Kansas City scene. Even in his teens, the big-boned Turner looked entirely mature enough to gain entry to various K.C. night clubs. He ended up tending bar and singing there before he hooked up with boogie-piano master, Pete Johnson, during the early '30s. Theirs was a partnership that would last for 13 years.
