Big Joe Turner Shake, Rattle & Roll Lyrics:
Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands.
Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands.
Well, you get in that kitchen, make some noise with the pots 'n pans.

Way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin' through.
Way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin' through.
I can't believe my eyes, all that mess belongs to you.

I believe to the soul you're the devil, and now I know.
I believe to the soul you're the devil, and now I know.
Well, the more I work, the faster my money goes.

((I said shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll.))
((Shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll.))
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul.

Yeah, blow Joe!

[Instrumental break featuring saxophone solo. (See note 2)]

I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store.
I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store.
Well, I can't look at you till you ain't no child no more.

Ah, ((shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll.))
((Shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll.))
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul.

I been holdin' it in, way down underneath.
I been holdin' it in, way down underneath.
You make me roll my eyes, baby, make me grit my teeth.

I said ((shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll.))
((Shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll.))
Well, you won't do nothin' to save your doggone soul.

Shake, rattle and roll!

Big Joe Turner Shake, Rattle & Roll Lyrics Information:

SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL 1a 1b
Written by: Charles E. Calhoun See note 1
Performed by: Big Joe Turner & His Blues Kings 2 3
First released 4 :
Single: April 1954
Album: 1957

1 Turner's version of "Shake, Rattle & Roll," was recorded in New York on
February 15, 1954, and reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart in June. Its
success did not, however, cross over to the pop chart. Legend has it that
the song started life as a string of unconnected blues verses written by
Atlantic records staff producer Jesse Stone, writing under the name of
Charles Calhoun, for Big Joe Turner. The leftover verses were then recycled
into Turner's follow-up hit, "Flip, Flop and Fly." The original was recycled
into a pop hit for Bill Haley and the Comets, with its original lyrics being
severely "whitened" up for Haley's audience. Although Turner's version seems
a little stiff by modern standards, and Haley's version lasted the longest,
a quick listen to Joe Turner's swinging original puts the song's true
breakthrough in perspective. Turner's version of the song is highly sexual.
Perhaps its most salacious lyric, which was absent from the later Bill Haley
rendition, is "I've been holdin' it in, way down underneath / You make me
roll my eyes, baby, make me grit my teeth." On the recording, Turner slurred
the lyric "holdin' it in," since this line may have been considered too
risqué for publication. The chorus uses "shake, rattle and roll" to refer to
boisterous intercourse, in the same way that the words "rock and roll" were
first used by numerous rhythm and blues singers of the 1940s and 50s. Both
Turner's and Haley's versions contain the double entendre, "I'm like a
one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store," which offers vivid imagery to
those who choose to indulge in it.

1b There are many different versions of this song, and the lyrics shown
here are just one of them. You can see Joe Turner performing live, singing
other lyrics than appear here on the Video attached to this page.

2 Known variously as Joe Turner, The Boss of the Blues, and Big Joe Turner
(due to his 6'2," 300+ pounds stature), Turner's career as a performer
stretched from the 1920s into the 1980s. The "shouting" chorus on Turner's
version of "Shake, Rattle & Roll," consisted of Jesse Stone (See note 1),
and record-company executives Jerry Wexler and Ahmet Ertegün. The saxophone
solo is by Sam "The Man" Taylor. See note 5
