Full Biography of
Bob Rivers
Bob Rivers is a well known American, rock & roll, radio, on-air personality in the Pacific Northwest, as well as a prolific producer of parody songs, most famous for his Christmas song parodies.
Rivers' radio program, [The Bob Rivers Show,] is broadcast on Seattle rock station KZOK-FM. The cast currently includes Spike O'Neill, "Downtown" Joe Bryant, newswoman Maura Gallucci, director Arik Korman and producers Luciana Bosio and Pedro Bartes.
Rivers and his Twisted Tunes group (most often, Spike & the Impalers) have also produced a countless number of regular, non-holiday parodies covering anything from pop culture to politicians, to the various sports teams and players in the Seattle area.
BOB: A radio veteran of more than 20 years, Rivers got his start in Connecticut where he was heard on several radio stations. He spent time in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. He worked at 20 stations is about 6 years, once as a program director, which cured him of any further desire to be in management.
After a brief stint as keyboardist/songwriter for a 70's bar band, Bob returned to radio at legendary rock station WAAF, Worcester/Boston. He began writing song parodies called Twisted Tunes, which were syndicated by the ABC Radio Network.
In 1987, Bob left WAAF for WIYY in Baltimore. "Baseball was berry, berry good to me in Crabtown," says Bob, whose 11-day, on-air marathon during the '88 Orioles losing streak earned him the [NAB Promotion of the Year] award.
In 1989, Bob moved to Seattle, where he is the host of the morning talk/music show with Spike O'Neill and Joe Bryant, plus several staff members who all "appear" on the show.
Other prizes Bob has collected include an RIAA{1} Gold Record for Atlantic Records' "Twisted Christmas," which has sold over 1.6 million units. Bob was twice voted [Radio & Records'] major market [Rock Personality of the Year] and has been [Billboard's Radio Personality of the Week.] At the Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters Association's annual awards banquet, [The Soundies,] Bob has won three [People's Choice Awards] for the [Best Minute of the Year] in Seattle Radio. Bob says of [The Soundies,] "I love working in this town. I only have to do one minute of great radio per year."
Asked why Twisted Radio has been at the top of the ratings in Seattle for years, Bob says: "Our team is the best ensemble cast I've ever heard in this business. And we don't have to be shock jocks to be interesting."
SPIKE: A long time ago, in a more peaceful time when dinosaur bands ruled the earth and tobacco was still considered a vegetable, Spike O'Neill was born to poor bar owners in the Baltimore gin belt. Spike was raised by loving parents in a modest but comfortable home that he would one day burn to the ground.
After a mildly successful seven-year college career, Spike shunned formal education to pursue his fame and fortune in the social skills industries, eventually rising to the respected positions of used car salesman and singing bartender.
Spike began his radio career as a complaint caller to Rivers' show at Baltimore's WIYY. "Bob immediately saw my natural gift as a sarcastic smart-ass, and asked me to come along with him to the Pacific Northwest," Spike recalls, "and the rest, as they say, is a rap sheet."
Since arriving in Seattle in the summer of 1989, Spike has grown from an inexperienced part-time player to a fixture in the Seattle market and one of the most recognized writer-voice talents in the industry. Along the way, no sacrifice has seemed too great for the sake of entertaining the audience; on the air, Spike has removed every hair on his body after losing a bet, pierced his nipples (no bet involved), and submitted to a prostate exam.
Spike is the frontman for River's cover band, Spike & the Impalers, and has the great ability to sound just like the lead singer of any band they are covering.
Spike's turn-ons include his lovely wife Melissa, sunny days on his Electra Glide, and going for it on fourth down. His turn-offs include soft sweaty handshakes and indoor baseball.
JOE: Joe Bryant was born in the [Bible Belt] of Mississippi and moved west in a covered Station Wagon with his family at the age of ten. After going to 13 schools in twelve years, including Newport High in Bellevue, WA, where he graduated and Central Washington University, where he dropped out, Joe stumbled from one odd job to the next looking for a career path. That path eventually led to [The Bob Rivers Show,] where he took on the oddest of his many odd jobs. Thirteen years and two stations later, Joe is still hanging out with Bob and Spike every weekday morning. When he's not entertaining a morning drive audience, Joe is often found playing with his daughter, Emily, selling real estate, fishing, drinking or overeating - not necessarily in that order.
ARIK: Before joining [The Bob Rivers Show] in 2002, Director Arik Korman worked with such legendary Seattle broadcasters as Jim French, Dave Ross, Bill Yeend, Pat Cashman, Wayne Cody and Robert Hardwick.
Arik was born in Redondo Beach, California and attended the University of California, San Diego, where he bailed on the concept of becoming a doctor. When he got a "C" in chemistry for the first time in his academic life, Arik threw caution to the wind and headed north to Seattle.
In 1992, he married his wife Monique, who he randomly met contra dancing. Three years later, Arik's eyes were opened wide when he and Monique spent nearly 8 months backpacking through Asia, visitING Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. Arik and Monique are now in the process of adopting a baby from South Korea.
Arik's interests include travel, hiking, aviation, downhill and cross-country skiing, tennis, golf, gardening, philosophy, science, speaking foreign languages, swimming, snorkeling and running marathons.
Arik received the 2001 [Visionary Award] from Sabo Media, a high-profile, New York, media consulting firm. His work with World Vision to encourage listeners to [The Bob Rivers Show] to sponsor more than 3000 children in Ethiopia, Senegal and the Dominican Republic and build a school in Ethiopia has been the highlight of his radio career, resulting in a 2007 [Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters Association Soundie Award] and plenty of good karma for everyone involved.
MAURA: Maura Gallucci started her radio career with Northwest Public Radio at Washington State University's NPR affiliate, KWSU. In spite of early challenges after reporting that the American dollar was up against the German "douche" mark, (which should have been a warning that she'd inevitabley land at KZOK with Bob & the gang), Maura went on to hold jobs at Seattle's KIRO and KJR, San Francisco's KIOI, and nationally syndicated childrens's radio network, KIDSTAR.
Maura first appeared on [The Bob Rivers Show] in 1998, and after five years, took a hiatus to start a family. She's back now, though, and managing work & family quite well.
Maura has held many positions in radio from receptionist to sales assistant, traffic reporter and public affairs director to news director, anchor and retiree. She has reported from Tokyo, Stockholm, Rome and Sequim (Washington).
Maura has the most beautiful family on the ugliest street in Wedgwood and is thrilled to be back with Bob, Spike, Joe, Arik, Luciana, Pedro and the entire KZOK family.
LUCIANA: Luciana Bosio, Executive Producer of [The Bob Rivers Show,] was born in Santa Fe, Argentina and came to the United States with her husband, Pedro, to study broadcasting and speak English at the same time. They enrolled in Green River Community College and started appearing on-air at radio station KGRG, where they hosted [La Revolucion] and [Minority Report.] Luciana was the host of [Jaime y Luciana por la Manana] in the then only 24-hour Spanish radio station in the Puget Sound. After Spanish radio, Luciana was hired as Executive Producer for [The Bob Rivers Show.] The best job she's ever had! Luciana and Pedro love radio so much, that on the weekends they used to buy hours in a small multicultural radio station where they hosted [Antes del Mediodia] with other friends.
Luciana was introduced to hot yoga last year and she has not stopped loving every minute of it ever since. She's participated in various marathons and even though she has not run them, she can at least walk for many hours. On a hot summer evening, Luciana says, there's nothing better than a very cold glass of beer... Santa Fe style!
PEDRO: Pedro Bartes, Producer & Joke Writer for [The Bob Rivers Show,] was born in Santa Fe, Argentina and came with his wife, Luciana, to the United States to study broadcasting and speak English. Pedro hosted the show, [Antes de Medianoche] on the then only 24-hour Spanish radio station in the Puget Sound. [Antes de Medianoche] has historically been the highest rated show in Spanish in the Puget Sound. After that, Rivers decided to hire Pedro as the show's Associate Producer. Eventually, Bob made Pedro realize he was funny and could write jokes for fun.
In his free time, Pedro likes playing drums and to think of jokes while working out. Pedro's jokes have been published in Newsday and featured on the Tonigh Show with Jay Leno. He still can't drive, but he keeps on promising he's gonna learn... one day! __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ {1}The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a group which represents the recording industry distributors in the United States.
