{1}"(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" was an enormous chart success internationally, spending seven weeks at #1 on the U.S. [Billboard Hot 100,] sixteen consecutive weeks at #1 on the U.K. Singles Chart (the longest in British chart history), and #1 in every major market of the world. It spent nine weeks atop the [RPM] singles chart in Canada and #16 on the [Billboard All Time Top 100.] The record won a Grammy Award for [Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television] in 1992, and was nominated for an Academy Award for [Best Song.] Also it achieved three times Platinum stautus in the U.S. Michael Kamen, the movie's musical director, had originally wanted the song sung by Maid Marian to Robin Hood. David Kerschenbaum of Morgan Creek Records, publisher of the soundtrack, invited Adams, with whom he had worked in 1980s at A&M Records, to write the song based on a score from Kamen. Initially, Adams was to write the lyrics for another artist to perform, but the actresses to whom Kamen offered it, declined. Since it was late into the filming of the movie, it was decided that Adams should perform the song. After writing the song with his producer/partner, "Mutt" Lange, neither Kamen nor the film company were happy with it, due to Adams and Lange writing an entirely different melody to the theme. They tried at length to have Adams change it but Adams refused. The song is credited to Adams, Lange and Kamen, and is played over the film's credits. A&M Records were at first reluctant to have the song appear on the film soundtrack, but the success of the record benefited both companies.
