Chuck Berry You Never Can Tell Lyrics:
It was a teenage wedding,
And the old folks wished 'em well.
You could see that Pierre,
Did truly love the mademoiselle.
And now the young monsieur and madame,
Have rung the chapel bell.
"C'est la vie," say the old folks,
"It goes to show you never can tell."

They furnished off an apartment,
With a two-room Roebuck 3 sale.
The coolerator 4 was crammed,
With TV dinners and Ginger Ale.
But when Pierre found work,
The little money comin' worked out well.
"C'est la vie," say the old folks,
"It goes to show you never can tell."

They had a hi-fi phono,
Boy, did they let it blast.

Seven hundred little records,
All rock, rhythm and jazz.
But when the sun went down,
The rapid tempo of the music fell.
"C'est la vie," say the old folks,
"It goes to show you never can tell."

They bought a souped-up jitney 5 ,
Was a cherry red '53.
Drove it down New Orleans,
To celebrate their anniversary.
It was there where Pierre was,
Wedded to the lovely mademoiselle.
"C'est la vie," say the old folks,
"It goes to show you never can tell."

[Instrumental break.]

They had a teenage wedding,
And the old folks wished them well.
You could see that Pierre,
Did truly love the mademoiselle.
And now the young monsieur and madame,
Have rung the chapel bell.
"C'est la vie," say the old folks,
"It goes to show you never can tell."

Chuck Berry You Never Can Tell Lyrics Information:

YOU NEVER CAN TELL
Written by: Chuck Berry
Performed by: Chuck Berry 1 -1959
Appears on: Reelin' & Rockin'-1959, Duck Walking 2 -1983,
The Anthology-2000, The Definitive Collection-2006, et al.

1 Covered by: Loggins & Messina-1975, John Prine-1975, Riders of the
Purple Sage-1976, Donny Osmond-1978, Waylon Jennings-1981, Willie and the
Poor Boys-1985, Aaron Neville-1993, Billie Joe Spears-1997, et al.

2 Duck walking was Berry's signature "move" and was introduced into his
act in New York in 1956. Berry says he perfected his famous "Duck walk" to
hide the wrinkles in a rayon suit. "It got an ovation," he recalls,
"so I did it again and again." Directions for the move are:
Lift your right or left knee up. Then take it straight down and,
at the same time, jump forward with your other foot 3 times,
then turn. Repeat with other foot!

3 The retailer, Sears, was formerly known as, Sears & Roebuck.

4 Coolerator was a slang for refridgerator, although at the time this
song was written most homes still had ice boxes.'

5 A jitney was a cab of sorts, much like the vanpool of today.
In the song the young couple seems to have bought a used,
"souped up" one, and had pretty good luck with it.
