{1} This song was written to pay homage to Marvin Gaye (Apr. 2, 1939-Apr. 1, 1984) and Jackie Wilson (Jun. 9, 1934-Jan. 21, 1984).

{2} With the departure of Lionel Richie from the group a year and a half earlier, Walter Orange and J. D. Nicholas handle the lead vocals. Interestingly enough, "Nightshift," is the only song that garnered the Commodores (with or without Richie) a grammy.
