Backup singers:
How do you spell relief?
John Hartford:
I get D-R-U-N-K.
Hartford:
Lately, Dave, since my baby left me,
I do it almost every day.
It's the only thing that I've found,
That'll take the hurt away.
David Allan Coe: But, how do you spell relief, John?
Hartford: I get D-R-U-N-K.
Harford:
Well, ev'ry night about sundown,
I get a pain down deep inside.
This old broken heart acts up,
There's a hurtin' in my pride.
But I've found a sure fire treatment,
That'll get me feelin' right.
When your memory starts a-flarin' up,
I just head for the neon lights.
Backup singers: How do you spell relief,
Hartford: David?
Coe: I get D-R-U-N-K.
Lately since my baby left,
I do it almost every day.
It's the only thing that I've found, John,
That'll take the hurt away.
Hartford & backup singers: Well how do you spell relief?
Coe: I just get D-R-U-N-K.
Instrumental break.
John Hartford:
Yeeeaaaah.
Coe:
I don't need no doctor,
Tell me what is wrong.
I can fill my own perscriptions.
And it lasts me all night long.
It's the perfect medication,
For an ailment such as mine.
I forget about the tears I've cried,
When the whiskey hits my mind.

D-R-U-N-K
Written by: Tim DuBois & Larry Paxton
Performed by: David Allan Coe & John Hartford
Appears on: Tennessee Whiskey-19811 & Invictus (Means) Unconquered/
Tennessee Whiskey (Double CD)-19952.
1In the liner notes for this album, Coe writes, "The 'Tennessee Whiskey'
is all gone now and I'm just 'Sittin on the Dock of the Bay' watching that
Key West sunset and a big old shrimp boat named, 'Juanita,' rolling past
our dock. Most of you know 'I'll Always Be a Fool For You,' so you don't
have to worry about me getting too involved in the ocean and forgetting my
music. There are times when I fell like 'I've Given 'Bout All I Can Take'
but then I find myself 'Pledging My Love' once again to the road and all
its glory. 'If I Knew' what 'Little Orphan Annie' did with the rest of the
peanut butter I'd make me something to eat. But one thing is certain, 'We
Got A Bad Thing Goin'' and there's no sense in stopping now. Even after
seeing 'Take This Job and Shove It,' I still felt bad, and when Meme said,
'How Do You Spell Relief?' I said, "I get, 'D-R-U-N-K.'" She reminded me
that I'd quit drinking twelve years ago, which left me with nothing else to
say. So I put a tape of this new album on and realized that once again my
music had taken a new turn. But remember a long time ago I warned you about
that! For Billy Sherrill's sake, I hope we have a hit single in here
somewhere. I enjoyed it. I hope you do. Sincerely, David Allan Coe."
