My baby's gone an' left me,
Left me all alone.

That was a death scream of an angel.
Don't know why, oh, why?

But I'm too afraid to die.
Ooh-oh, oh-oh, I want my baby back home.

Outro:
I want my baby home.
I know that she is gone,
But still I want her home.
Weeping & wailing.
Ooo-ooo-ooo, ooo-ooo-ooo.

Donald Woods & the Vel-Aires Death of an Angel Recording details & track overview

{1}"Death of an Angel" dealt with the demise of a teenage girl, recorded as a droning, funereal lamentation with melodramatic weeping. Woods' part expressed his desire to join his girlfriend in death. The song was considered controversial because of its end-of-life/would-be-suicide theme.{5} Deemed unsuitable for commerical airplay, the record was pulled from radio station playlists. {2a}Personnel performing on this recording: * Donald Woods (1st tenor) * Andrew Blue (2nd tenor) * Ralph Bryant (baritone) * Ira Foley (bass) {2b}Covered by: The Royal Pendletons et al. {2c}The Vel-Aires were known as the Bel-Aires when they weren't backing Woods. It should be mentioned that the group that recorded this record was based in Los Angeles, California, but at the same time, there was a group from the Chicago, Illinois area that was also using the name The Bel-Aires, and they shouldn't be confused. Personnel from the Chicago group included, Milard Edwards (lead, baritone), Ezell Wil.....MORE.....(all Death of an Angel track/recording details)

In 1954, Flip Records, a small, Hollywood based label, that specialized in Doo-Wop, recorded two Singles by Donald Wood & the Vel-Aires, "This is Paradise," backed with "Let's Party Awhile," (Flip #303) and "White Port & Lemon Juice," backed with "This Is Goodbye," (Flip #304).

1955's "Death of an Angel," backed with "Man from Utopia," (Flip #306) made quite an impression on the listening public, but not in a good way.
