{2}Doris Troy was born, Doris Higginson in 1937, and at times went by the name, Doris Payne but was often called, "Mama Soul," by her peers. Both before and after her solo career peaked, she worked as a back-up singer for several notable artists, such as, Solomon Burke, The Drifters, Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick, The Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, Kevin Ayers, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Dusty Springfield, Nick Drake, Junior Campbell and Carly Simon to name a few. She co-wrote (with her sister, VY) the stage musical, Mama, I Want To Sing, based on her life, that ran for 1,500 performances at the Heckscher Theatre in Harlem. Troy played her own mother, Geraldine. The musical has been reinterpreted as a motion picture, due for release in early 2009. The film's cast includes musicians Ciara, Ne-Yo, Bobby Valentino, Ralph Tresvant and Patti Labelle. Also starring is CSI: NY-actor, Hill Harper.
