Well, she comes from Tallahassee (whoo),
She's got a HI-FI chassis (whoo).
Maybe looks a little sassy (whoo),
But to me she's real classy (whoo).
Yeah, my Tallahassee Lassie,
Down in F-L-A7.
Well, she's rompin' to The Drag8,
The Cha Cha8, Rag-a-mop8.
Stompin' to The Shag8 whoo,
Rocks the Bunny Hop8.
(A-ooo, hoo-ooo, hoo-ooo, hoo-ooo.)
Well, she dances to The Bop8.
She dances to The Stroll8,
She dances to The Walk8,
Whoo, she can rock & roll.
She's my Tallahassee Lassie (whoo).
Yeah, my Tallahassee Lassie (whoo).
She's my Tallahassee Lassie.
Down in F-L-A7.
Instrumental break featuring Kenny Paulson on guitar.
Well, she comes from Tallahassee (whoo),
She's got a HI-FI chassis (whoo).
Maybe looks a little sassy (whoo),
But to me she's real classy (whoo).
Yeah, my Tallahassee Lassie,

Down in F-L-A7.
C'mon, baby.
C'mon, honey.
Fade.

1"Tallahassee Lassie" is a true sleeper song. Seemingly built on little
more than a well-worn blues melody and a pounding beat, it appears like a
million other '50s rock & roll ready-mades, at least at first glance. But
a deeper listen to Freddy Cannon's original recording reveals a blueprint
for do-it-yourself production and editing that's pretty damn mind-boggling
for 1959. The basic track is a quickie session in a local Boston studio.
His producers get a hold of the entire session reel, splice together a new
version from various takes, and start overdubbing bass drums, handclaps,
even Cannon's patented "whoos," until the record had no holes left and an
absolutely throbbing, big beat. The result was a massive hit and the
beginnings of Cannon's hit-laden career. The song was also influential in
how guitar bands approached rock & roll; "Tallahassee Lassie," established
what later became known as the "Stones" rhythm, most prominent on "Brown
Sugar," a song directly inspired by Mick Jagger's repeated listenings to
Cannon's record. (Paraphrased, in part, from an AMG review.).
2Written, or at least started by Freddy's mother, it was the custom of
record label producers to share co-writing credits as partial payment for
their putting up the front money on new talent. I don't know her first
name, only her first initial and last name, and all my research so far
hasn't turned it up.
3Freddy Cannon was dubbed "Boom Boom" because of his thundering musical
renditions.
4Covered by: Danny & the Juniors, The Flamin' Groovies, Fleetwood Mac,
Jan & Dean, Mud, Tommy Steele, Hurriganes, Peter Green, et al.
5Kenny Paulson plays guitar solo during the break.
6Transcribed from the track on this album.
7Prior to the 2-letter postal codes in the United states, Fla. was the
common abbreviation for Florida. Tallahassee is a city in Florida.
