about School Is Out by Gary U.S. Bonds
["SCHOOL IS OUT"{4}] Written by: Gene Barge & Gary "U.S." Bonds. Performed by: Gary "U.S." Bonds{5}{6} First released{7}: Single: 1961 Album: 1961
{1}"A Night with Daddy 'G'" is a song by the Church Street Five that Bonds mentions in a couple of his songs. (For the complete story, see the note 1 after the lyrics to "Quarter to Three," by Gary "U.S." Bonds on the mp3lyrics.org website.)
{2}Blow Daddy! refers to Gene "Daddy 'G.'" Barge. Bonds is commenting as a way of introducing Daddy 'G' as the saxophone soloist during the break. (For the complete story, see the note 1 after the lyrics to "Quarter to Three," by Gary "U.S." Bonds on the mp3lyrics.org website.) (<a href="../quarter-to-three/">Quarter to Three</a>)
{3}"Play a-choo-choo, now," refers to "The Locomotion," by Little Eva in which the dance steps vaguely resemble the motion of a train. "The Continental," was line dance. (Both of these songs/dances were very popular in the early '60s. A video of "The Locomotion can be found on YouTube.)
{4}"School Is Out" made it to #5 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1961.
{5}Born Gary Anderson, June 6, 1939, Gary grew up in the Norfolk, Virgina area. When he was not yet 21, he was approached by local record producer, Frank Guida, to join his tiny Legrand label. Guida changed Anderson's name to U.S. Bonds, hoping the first release, "New Orleans," would get extra airplay by disc jockeys mistaking it for a public-service announcement. Bonds is a rhythm & blues and rock & roll singer and a prolific songwriter.
