If I had boots like a-Emmy Lou's
[2] ,
I'd be a big ol' star.
Rhinestones on my BVD's
[3] ,
And a Hummingbird
[4] guitar.
I'd buy myself the biggest bus,
To ever grace the track.
With a loveseat for the two of us,
And a swimming pook in back.
If I had boots like Emmy Lou's
I'd wear my hair like Loretta
[5] used to do.
I'd sing like Patsy Cline
[6] ,
And Kitty Wells
[7] combined.
If I had boots like a-Emmy Lou's,
I'd never need a shine.
If I had boots like a-Emmy Lou's
I'd be so very rich.
I'd hire a dog to scratch me,
Every time I got an itch.
I'd buy a thousand cadillacs,
With Longhorns
[8] in the front.
Drive one till the ashtray filled,
Then haul it to the dump.
If I had boots like Emmy Lou's
I'd wear my hair like Loretta used to do.
I'd sing like Patsy Cline,
And Kitty Wells combined.
If I had boots like a-Emmy Lou's,
I'd never need a shine.
I'd buy my clothes from Nudie
[9] .
Have fingernails like Tammy
[10] ,
I'd tease my hair like Dolly
[11] ,
And measure ten feet tall.
I'd teach those boots to talk,
They'd lecture in New York.
If I had boots like Emmy Lou's,
I'd never need to walk.
[Instrumental break featuring "tuba [12] " and honky tonk piano.]
If I had boots like a-Emmy Lou's
I'd die without a care.
Fly straight up to heaven's gate,
And shove my way in there.
And when Saint Peter asked me,
What I'd done to be so bold.
I'd point down to my boots and say,
"They're recently resolded."
So fit me for a robe, wings and halo too.
But I cannot stay if you take away,
My boots like Emmy Lou's.
If I had boots like Emmy Lou's

[1] Transcribed from the track on this album.]
[2] Refers to American Country, folk, alternative rock, singer/
songwirter and musician, Emmy Lou Harris, who received numerous
Grammy Awards throughout her career and is often sought after to
work with highly-successful groups.]
[3] The Hummingbird model is a classic, acoustic guitar made by
the Gibson company.]
[4] BVD stands for Bradley, Voorhees & Day, the New York City
firm that manufactured underwear of this name for both men and women.]
[5] Refers to Country & Western legend, Loretta Lynn who was one of the
leading country vocalists and songwriters during the 1960s and 1970s,
and overall is revered as a country icon.]
[6] Patsy Cline was an American country super-star who enjoyed pop music
crossover success during the early 1960s.]
[7] Kitty Wells was the first female Country singer to top the U.S.
Country charts and it shot her to stardom in the 1960s.]
[8] The Texas longhorn is a breed of cattle known for its characteristic
horns. In the southern part of the U.S., replicas of the horns are very
popular as car hood ornaments.]
[9] Nudie Jeans, unlike the new "pre-wash" craze, come as dark,
non-adulterated denim. The company feels that this way, the wearer can
imprint his or her own personality onto the jeans. As the indigo fades,
it reflects a particular life pattern. While Nudie Jeans may not be
stunning the crowds gathered around New York City catwalks, they have
enchanted a major following in the city and beyond.]
[10] Refers to Tammy Wynette who was a Country music singer-songwriter
and one of Country music's best-known artists and biggest-selling
female vocalists.]
[11] Refers to Dolly Parton who, to date, remains one of the most successful
Country artists, with 26 number-one singles (a record for a female performer)
and 42 top-10 country albums (more than anyone else). She is known for her
distinctive mountain soprano voice, sometimes bawdy humor, flamboyant dress
sense and voluptuous figure.]
[12] Attempting to save money on the production of the album, God & the FBI, the
core group (instruments & vocals by Janis, Jim Cregan, Marc Moreau, and Philip
Clark), did all the singing (with the exception of "Memphis") and either played
all the instruments or created the sounds. When Janis wanted a tuba on this song,
no one was willing to learn the instrument, so what you hear is actually
co-producer Jim Cregan singing a tuba part, which is then electronically dropped
an octave lower and added to the mix.]
