Roses
The other side of the
Boy i really tied one
This must be wrong
Fly too high
Silly habits
Dead men walking
Some people
Stars
Do you wanna dance

In the winter
Lover's lullabye

Janis Ian Lyrics
NEW Lyrics!
The man you are in me
I believe im myself
Aftertones
Miracle row/maria
This night
Jennie (iowa sunrise)
Let me be lonely
Passion play
Weary lady
Don't cry, old man
Shady acres
The tangle of my mind
Sweet misery

Janis Ian Society's Child (Baby, I've Been
Thinking) Lyrics
:
Come to my door, baby, face is clean and shining, black as night.
My mother went to answer, you know that you looked so fine.
Now, I could understand your tears and your shame,
She called you, "boy," instead of your name.
When she wouldn't let you inside, when she turned and said,
"But, honey, he's not our kind."
She says I can't see you anymore, baby, can't see you anymore.

Walk me down to school, baby, everybody's acting deaf and blind.

Until they turn and say, "Why don't you stick to your own kind."
My teachers all laugh, their smirking stares,
Cutting deep down in our affairs.
Preachers of equality, think they believe it, hen why won't they just let us be?
They say I can't see you anymore, baby, can't see you anymore.

One of these days I'm gonna stop my listening, gonna raise my head up high.
One of these days I'm gonna raise up my glistenin' wings an' fly.
But that day will have to wait for a while, baby, I'm only society's child.
When we're older things may change,
But for now, this is the way they must remain.
I say, "I can't see you anymore, baby, can't see you anymore.
No, I don't want to see you anymore, baby."

Janis Ian Society's Child (Baby, I've Been Thinking) Lyrics Information:

SOCIETY'S CHILD (BABY, I'VE BEEN THINKING) 1
Written by: Janis Ian
Produced by: George "Shadow" Morton
Arranged by: George "Shadow" Morton & Janis Ian
Performed by: Janis Ian 2
First released: 3
Single: 1966
Album: 1967

1 "Society's Child" was Janis Ian's first release. The lyrics of the song
center around the feelings of a young, white girl who witnesses the humiliation
that her African-American boyfriend receives from her mother and the taunts that
she endures from classmates and teachers. It closes with her decision to end her
relationship with the boyfriend because of her inability to deal with the social
pressure. The original title of the song was, "Baby, I've Been Thinking," but
Ian's producer, Shadow Morton, changed it to "Society's Child." Ian wrote the
song in 1965 when she was 14 years old. It was recorded in 1965, using six
studio musicians for backup, but it wasn't released until 1966, and didn't enter
Billboard's Top 40 until June 1967. The single was #1 or in the top ten in
several key cities across America, but stalled at #14 on the the national chart.
Several radio stations were slow to add the song to their playlist because of
the subject matter. However, Leonard Bernstein, who was a fan of Ian, featured
the song in a segment of his CBS-TV prime-time network special, Inside Pop: The
Rock Revolution. This exposure garnered enough attention that Verve Records
started promoting the song in trade magazines. Eventually more stations picked
it up and "Society's Child" didn't suffer quite the same abysmal "death" as did
other controversial songs of the era. Ultimately, it was inducted into the
Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2001.
