Galveston, Texas, which is characterized as a woman, "I still see her standing by
the water... Standing there, looking out to sea, and is she waiting there for
me...?" Webb has stated in interviews that, contrary to some people's perception
of this song being a protest againt the Viet Nam war, he imagined the action
taking place during a battle of the Spanish-American War, the time period when
the City of Galveston reached its civic peak. The song made the CMT 4 list of
the ten greatest country-western songs of all time. Glen Campbell's single made
#4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the country music and "Easy Listening"
charts.
