Well, I got a friend named Whiskey Sam
He was my boonierat buddy for a year in Nam
He said I think my country got a little off track
It took 'em twenty-five years to welcome me back
But it's better than not coming back at all
Many a good man I saw fall
And even now, every time I dream
I hear the men and the monkeys in the jungle scream
Drive on, it don't mean nothin'
My children love me but they don't understand (but)
And I got a woman who knows her man, drive on
It don't mean nothin', it don't mean nothin', drive on
I remember one night, Tex and me
Rappelled in on a hot LZ (rappelling down a rope from a Huey helicopter which would not land in a contested landing area or "hot LZ" - Landing Zone)
We had our 16's on rock and roll (M-16's on full automatic instead of 3-round burst)
And with all of that fire I was scared and cold (self explanatory)

And I have seen the tiger smile
I spit in a bamboo viper's face
And I'd be dead, but by God's grace Drive On
Drive on, it don't mean nothin'
My children love me but they don't understand (but)
And I got a woman who knows her man, drive on
It don't mean nothin', it don't mean nothin', drive on
Well I came home, but Tex did not
And I can't talk about the hit he got
But I got a little limp now when I walk
And I got a little tremolo when I talk
But I finally found out who I am
I'm a walkin' talkin' miracle from Vietnam Drive On
Drive on, it don't mean nothin'
My children love me but they don't understand (but)
And I got a woman who knows her man, drive on
It don't mean nothin', it don't mean nothin', drive on

Johnny Cash, born February 26, 1932, as J. R. Cash, in Kingsland, Arkansas, to Ray (1897-1985) and Carrie (née Rivers) Cash (1904-1991), and raised in Dyess, Arkansas, was an American singer, songwriter, actor, author, and Biblical scholar, who was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country music artist, his songs and sound spanned many other genres including rockabilly and rock and roll, especially early in his career, as well as blues, folk, and gospel. Late in his career, Cash covered songs by several rock artists.
Cash was known for his deep, distinctive bass-baritone voice, for his demeanor and for his dark clothing, which earned him the nickname, "The Man in Black." He traditionally started his concerts by saying, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."
Much of Cash's music, especially that of his later career, echoed themes of sorrow, moral tribulation and redemption......MORE.....(full Johnny Cash biography) ←
