As I walked out on Laredo one day.
I spied a young cowboy all wrapped in white linen,
Wrapped in white linen as cold as the clay.
"I can see by your outfit that you are a cowboy."
These words he did say as I boldly walked by.
"Come an' sit down beside me an' hear my sad story.
I'm shot in the breast an' I know I must die."
"It was once in the saddle, I used to go dashing.
Once in the saddle, I used to go gay.
First to the card-house and then down to Rose's.
But I'm shot in the breast and I'm dyin' today.
"Get six jolly cowboys to carry my coffin.
Six dance-hall maidens to bear up my pall.
Throw bunches of roses all over my coffin.
Roses to deaden the clods as they fall.
"Then beat the drum slowly, play the fife lowly,
Play the death march as you carry me along.
Take me to the green valley, lay the sod o'er me,
I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong.
"Then go write a letter to my grey-haired mother,

But please not one word of the man who had killed me.
Don't mention his name and his name will pass on."
When thus he had spoken, the hot sun was setting.
The streets of Laredo grew cold as the clay.
We took the young cowboy down to the green valley,
And there stands his marker, we made, to this day.
We beat the drum slowly, played the fife lowly,
Played the dead march as we carried him along.
Down in the green valley, laid the sod o'er him.
He was a young cowboy and he said he'd done wrong.
STREETS OF LAREDO
Traditional1Performed by: Johnny CashAppears on: Sings the Ballads of the True West-1965, Mean as Hell-1966 & 1991,American (Recordings) IV2: The Man Comes Around-2005, et al.
1According to the liner notes on Johnny Cash Sings Ballads of The True
West, "The Streets Of Laredo" is supposed to be an account of a man who
died of syphilis in a London hospital. The lryic, "play the fife
slowly," underlines the song's most likely Irish/Scottish origins. In a
way, though, this first-person lament for a dead cowboy becomes more
mysterious when we don't really know why this young cowboy has gone
wrong.

Johnny Cash biography
Johnny Cash, born February 26, 1932, as J. R. Cash, in Kingsland, Arkansas, to Ray (1897-1985) and Carrie (née Rivers) Cash (1904-1991), and raised in Dyess, Arkansas, was an American singer, songwriter, actor, author, and Biblical scholar, who was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country music artist, his songs and sound spanned many other genres including rockabilly and rock and roll, especially early in his career, as well as blues, folk, and gospel. Late in his career, Cash covered songs by several rock artists.
Cash was known for his deep, distinctive bass-baritone voice, for his demeanor and for his dark clothing, which earned him the nickname, "The Man in Black." He traditionally started his concerts by saying, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."
Much of Cash's music, especially that of his later career, echoed themes of sorrow, moral tribulation and redemption......MORE.....(full Johnny Cash biography) ←
