It was in December and almost Christmas eve.
Families would be home for the season
Sharing their family fun and Holiday glee.
I wanted to get my mother something special
To put underneath her Christmas tree.
When I had visited her just a month ago,
she wanted me to take away the box
Of her old songs that had just gathered dust
And take away her tears
So she wouldn’t have to be disappointed
for the next forty years.
As I thought about a gift to buy,
I still remember her saying,
“These old songs haven’t done me any good!
Just take them away!”
“These old songs haven’t done me any good!
Just take them away!”
Like many people, all her life
She wanted to be a songwriter
And let the world know how she felt.
She grew up poor on a country farm
And had to work from dusk to dawn.
As hard as her life was, she always had her dream
That one day she would have a song
That would make it to the top of the charts
And her life would be forever changed!
As I thought about a gift to buy,
I remember her saying,
“These old songs haven’t done me any good!
Just take them away!”
“These old songs haven’t done me any good!
Just take them away!”

To look at all those old songs
Some of them were very good
And some were very special .
I began to work on the lyrics
To bring them in tune with the times.
Before I knew it and with a lot of help,
I had a new song with some sweet rhymes
In the country tradition
Called “My Tear Soaked Pillow.”
As I thought about a gift to buy,
I remember her saying,
“These old songs haven’t done me any good!
Just take them away!”
“These old songs haven’t done me any good!
Just take them away!”
When my mom heard her new song
For the first time on Christmas Day,
I realized Christmas wasn’t just about buying gifts.
It was about sharing and helping make
Someone’s dream come true.
She said this was greatest gift she had ever received
And she no longer was feeling so blue!
Just remember Christmas isn’t about just buying gifts,
It can be something very special!
You can help someone make their dreams come true
Even if it is just an old song in the country tradition.
Dreams can still come true!
