There is a place called long ago.
I visit it sometimes,
Where pinewoods crackle in the sun
And cypress sentinels stand.
Pale passionflowers still grow wild
Among the sandy spurs,
Where ticks and red ants make a nest
And armadillos mound.
There’s not much to be said for it,
Most people pass with frown.
Why even water must be gleaned
From wellspring twelve feet down.
That’s where we found a place of rest,
So many years ago.
When barefoot children ran on grass
I had no time to mow.
Their father passed away too soon
And I had just one quest:
To take my darling children where
We all could get some rest.
There wasn’t much to do up there,
Back in those piney woods
A dog or two, and puppies new
Were entertainment too.
Once in a while we’d take the car
And see a film or two,
In far off city where the folks
Had clothes and shoes brand new.
But mostly we did spend our days
Right there on our small plot,
By ditches wild and neighbors mild,

The children grew and went away,
Time came to leave this land.
Through joys too few and heartaches too,
I packed with weary hand.
Two kids are married raising kids
And one with Angels dwells,
While I, alone in my small room,
Think back as my heart swells,
To piney woods so stately, tall,
With nothing else around,
But burs and hardships, rich like rain
And crickets, bobwhite’s sounds.
The little church down yonder lane
Had benches hard and mean.
But every week I brought them there,
Young souls God’s words to glean.
I’m sure it all has changed somehow.
I would not go there now,
Except in dreams and memories
The harder then, more dear
Within my heart, my worn out heart,
Now that my life’s more clear.
Today I have most all my wants
And wishes filled to brim.
No dearth of daily bread or wine,
It’s all here at my whim.
But what gives taste and bite to life
That’s now so soft and calm,
Is memories of our Whisp’ring Pines
Our nest in God’s own palm.
