Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels biography

Mitch Ryder (born William S. Levise, Jr., February 26, 1945, in Hamtramck, Michigan (not too far from Detroit), is an American musician who has recorded over two dozen albums in more than four decades.

As a teen, Ryder sang with a local, African-American quartet named The Peps but he suffered so much racial harassment as the only Caucasian in the group he soon left to a The Peps for a group called The Tempest. After a while he formed his own group and called it Billy Lee & The Rivieras. It was while opening for The Dave Clark Five1 during a 1965 tour that the Rivieras came to the notice of producer Bob Crewe,2 who immediately signed them to his label, New Voice, and, according to legend, renamed the singer Mitch Ryder, after randomly selecting it from a phone book. After that, he spontaneously dubbed the group, The Detroit Wheels.
