Oak Ridge Boys Hard to Be Cool (In a Minivan) Lyrics:
Sittin' at a red light,
Down around Sunset 1 ,
Girl pulled up beside me,
In a candy-apple red Corvette 2 .
She pulled down her shades, gave me a wink,
Gave her a little smile back.
Then she laughed as she hit the gas,
I remembered where I was at.

'Cause it’s hard to be cool when you’re behind the wheel,
Of an eight-passenger automobile.
In a big bubble, cruisin’ down the street,
With-a Barney 3 blarin’ and a baby seat.
Hey, it can be done, but I’m tellin’ you man,
It’s hard to be cool in a minivan.

I used to have a souped-up hotrod,
Man I spared no costs.
Two-eighty four 4 , four-on-the-floor 5 ,
Headers 6 and dual-exhaust 7 .
About the time the family came,
Well, that’s the first thing that went,
The preacher said, "For better or worse..."
Now I know just what he meant.

'Cause it’s hard to be cool when you’re behind the wheel,
Of an eight-passenger automobile.
In a big bubble, cruisin’ down the street,
With-a Barney blarin’ and a baby seat.
Hey, it can be done, but I’m tellin’ you man,
It’s hard to be cool in a minivan.

Now, I wouldn’t change my life a bit,
I’m a lucky man I know.
Just wish my wife and kids could fit,
In a ’67 GTO 8 . Ho-ho-ho.

'Cause it’s hard to be cool when you’re behind the wheel,
Of an eight-passenger automobile.
In a big bubble, cruisin’ down the street,
With Barney blarin’ and a baby seat.
Hey, it can be done, but I’m tellin’ you man,
It’s hard to be cool in a minivan.

Come on boys, can I hear an "Amen"?
It’s hard to be cool in a minivan.

[Spoken coda:]
I'm tryin' to be cool.
You kids keep it down back there,
Don't make me pull this thing over.
I mean it.
Honey, I am not lost. I am NOT lost.
I promise you, I know where I'm goin'.

1 Sunset refers to Sunset Boulevard in Los Angels, California, USA, notorious
in certain spots as a place for cruising and showing off hot cars.

2 The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car manufactured in the USA by General
Motors (GM) since 1953. At the time of its introduction it was America's only
two-seat car, and for decades was unchallenged as the premium domestic, hot,
sports car of its day. The first Corvette was designed after the fast ship of
the same name.

3 Barney & Friends is a 1992 children's television show produced in the United
States aimed at preschool children. The series features the title character,
Barney, a purple anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex who conveys learning through
songs and small dance routines with a friendly, optimistic attitude. Yuk!

4 284 refers to the number of cubic inches of displacement in the vehicle's
internal combustion engine. The larger the displacement of air the more
powerful the engine. In the 1960s, a 284 was a relatively big engine for the
small Corvette.

5 Known as a stick shift, manual, or standard transmission, it is a series of
gears designed to be driver-operated via a clutch with a foot pedal, for
transfering power from the engine to the wheels. Four gears was considered
"better for racing" than the three-gear transmission of standard cars.
Four-on-the-floor meant the shifting mechanism was mounted on the floor of the
vehicle rather than the steering column.

6 A header, or exhaust manifold, collects the exhaust gases from an internal
combustion engine's multiple cylinders and funnels them into one pipe. The goal
of a performance exhaust header is mainly to decrease flow resistance (back
pressure), and to increase the volume efficiency of an engine, resulting in a
gain in power output. Something every muscle car should have.

7 An exhaust system is usually tubing used to guide exhaust gases away from
the controlled combustion inside an engine. The entire system conveys burnt
gases from the engine and includes one or more exhaust pipes. The dual pipe
structure was an inexpensive way to move the gasses quicker and improve performance.

8 The Pontiac GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) is an automobile built by Pontiac
in the United States from 1964 to 1974, and by Holden in Australia from 2004 to
2006. It is often considered the first true muscle car.

9 "It's Hard to Be Cool (In a Minivan)" did not chart.

10 The Oak Ridge Boys is a country and gospel group that was founded in 1945
as the Oak Ridge Quartet. They became popular during the 1950s and changed
their name to the Oak Ridge Boys in the early 1960s. They remained a
gospel-oriented group until the mid 1970s, when they changed their image and
concentrated more on country and pop music.

Personnel at the time this track was recorded:
1. Duane Allen (tenor vocals)
2. Joe Bonsall (lead vocals)
3. William Lee Golden (baritone vocals)
4. Richard Sterban (bass vocals)
