Paul Simon The Late Great Johnny Ace Lyrics:
I was reading a magazine,
And thinkin' of a rock & roll song.
The year was nineteen fifty-four,
And I hadn't been playin' that long.
When a man came on the radio,
And this is what he said,
He said, "I hate to break it to his fans,
But Johnny Ace is dead, yeah, yeah."

Well, I really wasn't such a Johnny Ace fan,
But I felt bad all the same.
So I sent away for his photograph,
And I waited till it came.
It came all the way from Texas,
With a sad and simple face.
And they signed it on the bottom,
"From the Late, Great Johnny Ace, yeah, yeah, yeah."

[Instrumental break.]

It was the year of the Beatles.
It was the year of the Stones.
It was nineteen sixty-four.
I was livin' in London,
With the girl from the summer before.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It was the year of the Beatles.
It was the year of the Stones.
A year after J.F.K.
We were stayin' up all night,
And givin' the days away.
And the music was flowin' amazing,
And blowin' my way.

On a cold December evening,
I was walking through the Christmas tide.
When a stranger came up and asked me,
If I'd heard John Lennon died.
And the two of us went to this bar,
And we stayed to close the place.
And every song we played was for
The Late, Great Johnny Ace.

1 The Late Great Johnny Ace," initially tells of the R&B singer Johnny Ace,
who accidentally shot himself in 1954.

The song goes on to reference Ex-Beatle John Lennon, who was shot dead in 1980 by
Mark David Chapman, as well as referencing John F. Kennedy who was assassinated in
1963, the year Beatlemania started. The album version (as opposed to live performances)
features a one-minute coda composed by Phillip Glass, performed with strings,
clarinet, and flute. The song was first performed live by Paul Simon during the
Simon & Garfunkel reunion concert in Central Park in 1981. Near the end of the
performance (possibly in response to Simon mentioning John Lennon's death), an
audience member rushed the stage. He was quickly pulled away by security. While
clearly shaken - especially as the lyrics deal with assassinations - Simon continued
the song. The performance was included in the subsequent video release of the concert
but was omitted from the live album. In an interview on Late Night with David
Letterman on May 20, 1982, Simon discussed the Central Park experience. Asked to sing
the song and using a spontaneously-loaned guitar, Simon performed from his chair
instead of taking the stage. The before the end of the song one of the strings on the
guitar broke. On the 2000 "You're The One" tour he did perform the song without
interruption, preceding it with part of the Johnny Ace hit "Pledging My Love."
