"Sea of Love," credited as being by Phil Phillips with The Twilights (not to be confused with a group named The Twilights that released a few singles in the 1950's, nor the psychedelic pop-group of the mid-1960s), almost aced the U.S. [Billboard] Pop 100 chart in August of 1959, but had to settle for the #2 spot. I did, however, make it to the top of the R&B chart. To this day it remains one of the more enduring songs of the '50s.

In 1958, John Phillip Baptiste was a young, frustrated guitar player who worked as a bellboy in Lake Charles, LA. Baptiste wrote "Sea of Love" to serenade a love interest, which didn't pan out, but he continued to practice his song. One day he was overheard by a friend of George Khoury, a local record producer who had worked with a female group called Cookie and the Cupcakes.{1}
