What a beautiful thought I am thinking,
Concerning a great speckle bird.
Remember her name is recorded,
On the pages of God's Holy Word.

With all the other birds flocking 'round her,
She is so despised by the squad.
The great speckle bird in the Bible,
Representing the great church of God.

Desiring to lower her standards,
They watch every move that she makes.
They long to find fault with her teachings,
But really they find no mistakes.

I am glad I have learned of her meekness.
I am proud that my name is on her book.
For I want to be one never fearing,
The face of my Savior's true look.

When He cometh descending from heaven,
On the cloud that He writes in His Word.
I'll be joyfully carried to meet Him,
On the wings of that great speckle bird.

Below are other verses that are known to exist for this

All the other birds flocked against her.
They envy her glory and fame.
They hate her because she is chosen,
And has not denied her dear name.

She is spreading her wings for a journey.
She's going to leave by and by.
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning,
She'll rise and go up in the sky.

In the presence of all her despisers,
With a song never uttered before,
She will rise and be gone in a moment,
Till the great tribulation is o'er.

What a wonderful word is recorded,
By the prophet of God in His Word,
Of His church and all those who are faithful,
And are like to that great speckle bird.

I am longing the day of her coming.
When friends that are gone I shall see,
In robes and a crown of bright glory,
They are waiting in heaven for me.

Roy Acuff Great Speckled Bird Recording details & track overview

[GREAT SPECKLE BIRD]{1} Written by: Roy Carter & Rev. Guy Smith-1936{2} Performed by: Roy Acuff & His Crazy Tennesseans or His Smoky Mountain Boys{3}{4} First released:{5} Single: 1937 Album: 1958{6} {1}The title of the song comes from the Bible verse, Jeremiah 12:9 "Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird ..." Most versions of the Bible say that it is a speckled bird, however for some reason, the title of the 1958 album referenced in {Note 5} below is, "Great Speckle Bird," without the 'd,' and Acuff pronounces it speckle. Almost every other reference that I've seen to this song considers the word "Speckled." {2}The tune is the same as the traditional melody used in the folk song "I Am Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes," originally recorded in the 1920s. The same melody was later used in the 1952 country hit "The Wild Side of Life," sung by Hank Thompson, and the even more successful answer song{7} performed by Kitty Wells called, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angel.....MORE.....(all Great Speckled Bird track/recording details)

Acuff's family was fairly prominent, his paternal grandfather, had been a Tennessee state senator, and his maternal grandfather was a local physician. Roy's father was an accomplished fiddler and a Baptist preacher and his mother was proficient on the piano. During Roy's early years the Acuff house was a popular place for local gatherings.
