Skip Battin The Ballad of Dick Clark Lyrics:
Well, I had a friend on my car radio,
Oh, where are you Fats Domino? 3
All my old buddies have gone and got married,
Everybody 'cept ol' Chuck Berry 4 .

I heard the scream of a twang guitar,
Duane Eddy 5 , superstar.
Don't forget the The Breeze, the Chicken and the Stroll 6 ,
'Cause they're a part of rock & roll.

And somewhere out in the dark,
I pray to Dick Clark,
Tell me where has everybody gone,
There's no rockin' or boppin' on anybody's lawn.

Well, unemployment don't make me boogie,
And welfare won't set me free.
I need a good beat that's easy to rock to,
Well, I give it a 93 7 .

[Instrumental break.]

(Ah-ooom, bop-shoo-bop.)
(Ah-ooom, bop-shoo-bop.)
(Ah-ooom, bop-shoo-bop.)
(Ah-ooom.)

Well, I worship your name, was a lucky fellow,

Where were you Annette Funicello 8 ?
Where's the voices of the lonely nights?
The Penguins 9 , they were out of sight.

I had a buzz, so did all of us.
Where were you Alan Freed? 10
You would die from too much souls,
On the body was too much greed. 11

And somewhere out in the dark,
I pray to Dick Clark,
Tell me where has everybody gone,
No rockin' or boppin' on anybody's lawn.

Alright, unemployment don't make me boogie,
And welfare won't set me free.
I need a good beat that's easy to rock to,
Well, I give it a 93.

1 Richard Wagstaff "Dick" Clark (born November 30, 1929) is
an American television, radio personality, game show host and
businessman. He is best known for hosting long-running
television shows such as American Bandstand, five versions of
the Pyramid game show, and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin'
Eve.

2 Clyde "Skip" Battin (born February 18, 1934-July 6, 2003)
was a successful singer-songwriter, musician (guitar, bass
guitar, piano & vocals), performer and recording artist. Some
of the bands/luminaries with which he played were: The
Pledges, Skip & Flip (actually just the Pledges renamed), The
Clyde Gary Orchestra, Chuck & the Chuckles, Evergreen
Blueshoes, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Byrds (as bass
player), The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Prehistorics, Skip
Battin & the Group, Warren Zevon, Dick Van Parks, & Steve
Young, amongst others.

3 Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino (born February 26, 1928 in
New Orleans, Louisiana) was a classic R&B and rock and roll
pianist and singer-songwriter.

4 Charles Edward Anderson "Chuck" Berry (born October 18,
1926) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter and one
of the pioneers of rock and roll music. According to the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame's website, "While no individual can be
said to have invented rock and roll, Chuck Berry comes the
closest of any single figure to being the one who put all the
essential pieces together.

5 Duane Eddy is a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, he is
acclaimed as the most successful rock and roll instrumentalist
of all time.

6 The Breeze, the Chicken and the Stroll were names of
popular dances from the era.

7 American Bandstand was a television show that aired in
various versions from 1952 to 1989, was hosted from 1957 until
its final season by Dick Clark, who also served as producer.
The show featured teenagers dancing to Top 40-type music
introduced by Clark. A daily feature of the show would have
two selected teens listen to a new song and rate the record.
After the song played each person would give a short reason
why he or she liked or disliked it and then assign it a number
rating, from 1 (low) to 100 (high). Aftery their critique,
almost everyone would say, "... and I give it a..." and then
supply a number, grading the song.

8 Annette Joanne Funicello (born October 22, 1942) is an
American singer and actress. She was Walt Disney's most
popular original Mouseketeers. She appeared in a series of
beach movies with Frankie Avalon in the late 1950s.

9 The Penguins were an American doo-wop group of the 1950s
and early 1960s, best remembered for their only Top 40 hit,
"Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)," which was one of the first
rhythm and blues hits to cross over to the pop chart.

10 Albert James Freed, was an American disc-jockey who became
internationally known for being one of the first to promote
African-American rhythm and blues music on the radio. He is
credited with coining the phrase "rock and roll."

11 There are several words in this sentence that I am unsure
of. The word "souls" and the first 3 words on the line below
are unclear. What I have doesn't sound logical, so I'm pretty
sure I've got something wrong. Alan Freed was involved in a
payola scandal in the early '60s and it ruined his reputation.
I suspect these lines have something to do with the conviction
for promotional bribery and his untimely death due to
alcoholism. If you know the words, or can figure them out,
please contact me at bri4daz@mp3lyrics.com. I would really
appreciate it.
