Twelve and fifteen hundred strong
And the lonely nights are gladdened
By the watcher's lifting song
Dusty pads are wearing deeper
Wearing deeper as they wind
For the Vesty's mobs are walking
With the Bull's heads close behind
Baldies, shorthorns, wild eyed pikers
Mobs of ev'ry breed and brand
From the wilds of Westyern Australia
To the Barkley Tableland
While the bullocks from the Gulf runs
Are walking with the rest
And the battered, blackened quarts are boiling
On the stockroutes North and West
Down the river now they're stringing
To the flats of channel grass
And the Brumbies wheel and whistle
As the bullocks slowly pass
Swinging down the lonely stages
As the dust wrack swings aloft
From the rolling downs of avon

Mobs for sale and mobs for fatten
On the river flats inside
Oh, the good old days still linger
When the outback drovers ride
Slowly mobs are feeding campwards
As the evening shadows fall
And the battered, blackened quarts are boiling
In the twilight overall
By the plains and scrubs and rivers
Where the western stars burn bright
The friendly fires are glowing
In the drover's camps tonight
While the bullocks from the gulf runs
Are walking with the rest
And the battered, blackened quarts are boiling
On the stockroutes North and West
On the stockroutes North and West

In 1942 he gatecrashed radio station 2KM Kempsey to record at his own expense, his first record, “Song for the Aussies” and “My Final Song.” In 1946 he signed a recording contract with Columbia for their Regal Zonophone label and recorded six titles including his first country classic “When the Rain Tumbles down in July”., which he had written the year before.
