Down at the woolshed's the place to be,
Nobody's singin' out "Wool away."
They're all just dancin’ 'til the break of day.
Once the old woolshed used to ring,
To the sound of the shearing in full swing,
Rouse-about runs to the shearers shout,
"Tar here boy and be quick about it,"
Not any more all the sheep are gone,
The woolshed rings to a country song,
Old bush dancin’ and the singing too,
Concertina and a fiddle tune,(Hey)
Down at the woolshed you'll find me,
Down at the woolshed's the place to be,
Nobody ever wants to go to bed,
There's too much on at the old woolshed.
Ho!
Instrumental
Down at the woolshed things have changed,
But all the good times are still the same,
There's a different style to the dancin' now,
The music playin' has a different sound,
Down to the woolshed come with me,
Down at the woolshed I want to be,
Put on your jeans or your ole mole skins,
Be ready to dance and ready to sing,
To a cage an' fiddle and a guitar now,
Get in mind with the rest of the crowd,
And that's stick sides on cowboy boots,
Dance to the band, don’t give two hoots.
Hup!

He grew up on his father’s dairy farm at nearby Nulla Nulla Creek and at the young age of 10 he wrote his first song, ‘The Way the Cowboy Dies’
While still working on the family property, Slim sang during intervals at cinemas, at rodeos and community concerts and even did some busking on the streets.. In fact he sang whenever and wherever he could.
In 1942 he gatecrashed radio station 2KM Kempsey to record at his own expense, his first record, “Song for the Aussies” and “My Final Song.” In 1946 he signed a recording contract with Columbia for their Regal Zonophone label and recorded six titles including his first country classic “When the Rain Tumbles down in July”., which he had written the year before.
