In a lonely silent grave lies the heart that beat so true.
He fell faint and hungry, among the famished brave,
And they laid him sad and lonely within his nameless grave.
He cried, "Give me water and just one little crumb,
And my mother she will bless you in the days here to come.
Oh, tell my kind sister, so gentle and so true,
That I'll meet her up in Heaven in my faded coat of blue."
No more the bugle calls the weary one;
Rest, lonely spirit, in my grave unknown.
I'll know you and find you among the good and true
Where a robe of white is given for a faded coat of blue.

Long years have vanished and though he comes no more,
Yet my anxious heart will stop with each footfall at my door.
I gaze on a hilltop where he waved his last adieu
But no gallant lad I see, in his faded coat of blue.
No more the bugle calls the weary one;
Rest, lonely spirit, in my grave unknown.
I'll know you and find you among the good and true
Where a robe of white is given for a faded coat of blue.

In 1942 he gatecrashed radio station 2KM Kempsey to record at his own expense, his first record, “Song for the Aussies” and “My Final Song.” In 1946 he signed a recording contract with Columbia for their Regal Zonophone label and recorded six titles including his first country classic “When the Rain Tumbles down in July”., which he had written the year before.
