Send "Hell" Ringtone to your Cell
Squirrel Nut ZippersHell Lyrics:
In the afterlife you could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be hell to pay
People listen attentively I mean about future calamity
I used to think the idea was obsolete
Until I heard the old man stamping his feet
This is a place where eternally
Fire is applied to the body
Teeth are extruded and bones are ground
Then baked into cakes which are passed around
Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement
Top skill and brain
But all the things you try to hide
Will be revealed on the other side
Now the D and the A and the M
And the N and the A and the T and the I O N
Lose your face, lose your name
Then get fitted for a suit of flame

"HELL" 1
Written by: Tom Maxwell
Produced by: Mike Napolitano & Squirrel Nut Zippers
Performed by: Squirrel Nut Zippers 2
First released: 3
Single: October 1997
Album: January 1997.
1 "Hell" peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 75 Airplay chart in May
of 1997. Because "Hell" had this incessantly catchy rhythm and had
somehow been able to sneak through loosened alternative airplay rules,
it became a novelty hit. "Hell"'s bizarrely theatrical style caused
Squirrel Nut Zippers to quickly become one of the hottest alternative
bands of the first half of 1997.
An interesting side note is that when "Hell" began gaining popularity
in May of 1997, the single had not yet been released so radio stations
were playing the song from a CD. Because of that, "Hell" couldn't be
counted on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. Previously, Billboard had
"solved" this dilema with the "Billboard Hot 75 Airplay" chart (or BH75A).
BH75A was first published in 1984, as a 30-position chart (and was
eventually expanded to 75 positions in 1990). This chart was intended
to show which current songs were played the most on radio stations,
regardless of whether there was a released single or not. As the '90s
progressed, more and more of the popular hits were unavailable as
commercial singles. If a songs without a released single hit the BH75A
chart it was given the designation Air in its title to show where its
popularity was being recorded. Finally, Billboard had to revise their
rules, and on December 5, 1998, for the first time ever, the Hot 100
began to show "airplay-only" tracks on the regular chart. The result
was that any song that made the BH75A chart, automatically qualified
for the actual Hot 100 chart, thus ending the era of Air titles.
