The Andrews Sisters Bei Mir Bist Du Schon Lyrics:
Of all the boys I've known and I've known some
Until I first met you I was lonesome
And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light
And this old world seemed new to me

You're really swell, I have to admit you
Deserve expressions that really fit you
And so I've racked my brain hoping to explain
All the things that you do to me

Bei mir bist du schön, please let me explain
'Bei mir bist du schön' means you're grand
Bei mir bist du schön, again I'll explain
It means you're the fairest in the land

I could say 'bella, bella' even 'sehr wünderbar'
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I've tried to explain, 'bei mir bist du schön'
So kiss me and say you understand

Bei mir bist du schön
You've heard it all before but let me try to explain
'Bei mir bist du schön' means that you're grand
'Bei mir bist du schön,' it's such an old refrain
And yet I should explain, it means I am begging for your hand

I could say 'bella, bella' even 'sehr wünderbar'
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are

I could say 'bella, bella' even 'sehr wünderbar'
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I've tried to explain 'bei mir bist du schön'
So kiss me and say that you will understand!

BEI MIR BIST DU SCHÖN 1
Written in Yiddish by: Jacob Jacobs & Sholom Secunda
Written in English by: Sammy Cahn & Saul Chaplin
Performed by: The Andrew Sisters with Glenn Miller & His Orchestra 2 3
First released: 4
Single: 1953 5
Album: 1976 5

1 Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, translated, "To Me You're Beautiful," was a popular Yiddish song
composed for a 1932 musical, I Would If I Could. Sholom Secunda, one of the original
co-writers, sold the publishing rights to the song for a mere $30.00 US. In 1937, Sammy Cahn
heard a performance of the song, sung in Yiddish by African American performers Johnnie and
George at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. On seeing the crowd's response to the song, Cahn got
his employer to buy the rights so he (together with Saul Chaplin) could rewrite the song with
English language lyrics and rhythms more typical of swing music. He then convinced the still
unknown Andrews Sisters to perform the song (recorded November 24, 1937). It became their
first major hit, earning them the first Gold Record to have ever gone to a female vocal group.
Even though the song became famous with English lyrics it retained the Yiddish title, "Bei
Mir Bist Du Schöen." A common mondegreen 6 of the title is "My Dear Mister Shane."

2 On this recording:
Patty Andrews (lead vocals)
Maxene Andrews (high harmony)
LaVerne Andrews (low harmony)

5 "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" was recorded by the Andrews Sister in 1937 but I have been unable
to find documentation for earlier versions.

6 A mondegreen is the mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase, such as a line in a poem
or a lyric in a song, due to near homophony, in a way that yields a new meaning to the phrase.
It should not be confused with soramimi, which are songs that produce different meanings
from those originally intended, when interpreted in another language. You can read more
about mondegreens and soramimis the Wikipedia website.
