The Andrews Sisters The Donkey Serenade Lyrics:
[Maxene & LaVerne begin singing the following line:]
Da, da, da, da-da, da, da, da, da-da

[Maxene & LaVerne continue singing the
above as Patty sings her lines:]

[Patty:]
Dee-doo ba-da dee-doo.
Ba-da doo-da-ah-da-da-dee-doo-doo-doo-da-da-da-da-dah.

There's a song in the air,
But the fair señorita doesn't seem to care
For the song in the air.
So, I'll sing to the mule,
If you're sure she won't think that I am just a fool,
Serenading a mule.

Amigo mio, does she not have a dainty bray?
She listens carefully to each little tune you play.
(La bella señorita.)
Si, si, mi muchachita.
She'd love to play it too if only she knew the way.
But try as she may, in her voice there's a flaw,
And all that the lady can say...

There's a light in her eye.
Though she may try to hide it,

She cannot deny,
there's a light in her eye.

Señorita, donkey feet
Are not so fleet
As a mosquit-o,
But so sweet like my chiquita.
you're the one for me.

He's a mule, what a mule.
But all that my darling can say...
Hee-yaw, he-yaw, he-yaw.

Hi-his face is a dream,
Like an angel that I saw.
But all that my darling can say
Is hee-haw.

He can try as he may,
In his voice there is a flaw.
But all that, my handsome, you can say
Is hee-haw.

There's a light in his eye.
Though he may try to hide it,
He cannot deny,
there's a light in his eye.

There's a song in the air,
But the señor doesn't care.
And I love him so,
Even though he's just a mule.
I get a great big kick,
From that sweet señor, the mule,
Singing the donkey serenade.

The Andrews Sisters The Donkey Serenade Lyrics Information:

THE DONKEY SERENADE 1
Written by: George Forrest, Rudolf Friml, Herbert Stothart & Robert C. Wright
Perfomed by: The Andrews Sisters 2 3
First released: 4
Movie: 1937
Single: 5
Album: 1998 6

1 Not much is written about this song, "The Donkey Serenade." It seems to be
about a guy who has made an ass of himself, but whose gal still loves him. In
the film, The Firefly See Note 3 , it is sung by a male and female, to each
other. (I haven't seen the entire film, just a video clip from the end, where
the performers are singing parts of "The Donkey Serenade." The song makes
more sense when it's being sung by two people (of opposite sex) than it does
being sung by just the female Andrews sisters.

2 On this recording:
Patty Andrews (lead vocals)
Maxene Andrews (high harmony)
LaVerne Andrews (low harmony)

3 Originally featured in the film, The Firefly, in 1937, performed by Allan
Jones & Jeannette McDonald.
Also covered by:
Bert Ambrose
The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals
Buckingham Banjos
The Comedian Harmonists
Perry Como
Martin Denny
Duke Ellinton
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Rudolf Friml
Judy Garland

5 I haven't found any reference to a released single by the Andrews Sisters,
but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

6 This was the earliest album I could find that contained "Donkey Serenade."
That doesn't mean there weren't any before 1998.

7 Transcribed from the track on this album.
