The Crystals Uptown Lyrics:
He gets up each morning and he goes downtown,
Where everyone's his boss and he's lost,
In an angry land; he's a little man.

But then he comes uptown,
Each ev'nin' to my tenement,
Uptown, where folks don't
Have to pay much rent.
And when he's there with me,
He can see that he's everything.
Then he's tall, he don't crawl,
He's a king. (Uptown.)

Downtown he's just one of a million guys.
Where he don't get no breaks and he takes,
All they've got to give, 'cause he's got to live.

But then he comes uptown,
Where he can hold his head up high.
Uptown, he knows
That I'll be standing by.

And when I take his hand,
There's no man who could put him down.
The world is sweet, it's at his feet,
When he's uptown. (Uptown.)

Yeah-yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah.
(Uptown.)

Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
whoa-oh, whoa-oh, oh-yeah

Let me tell ya now

Uptown where he can hold his head up high.
Uptown he knows that I am standing by.
And when I take his hand,
There's no man who could put him down.
The world is sweet, it's at his feet,
When he's uptown.

Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah

Let me tell ya now, uptown
[Fade]
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

1 Although the Crystals cut the best known version of
"Uptown," Phil Spector originally tried recording the
song with Little Eva, songwriters Carole King and Gerry
Goffin’s 19-year-old live-in babysitter. The end result
was less than satisfactory – apparently, Spector was
not at all keen on Little Eva's voice, he and scrapped
the recording (Little Eva later rerecorded the song for
her debut album with King). Nevertheless, he persevered
with "Uptown," recutting it in January 1962 with
Barbara Alston singing lead for the Crystals. "Uptown"
reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

2 Starting out as a quintet, then a quartet and
ultimatly winding up as a trio, the following is a list
of each girl's tenure with the group:

Barbara Alston (1960-1964)-sang lead vocals on this recording.
Delores "Dee Dee" Kennibrew (1960-1966, 1971-present)
Mary Thomas (1960-1962)
Patricia "Patsy" Wright (1960-1964)
Merna Girard (1960-1962)
Dolores "La La" Brooks (1962-1966)
Frances Collins (1964-1966)
Darlene Love (Off and on from 1961-1966)

3 Covered by:
Little Eva,
et al.
