The Dixie Cups are an African-American, pop music, girl group of the 1960s. They are best known for their 1964 million selling disc, "Chapel of Love."1

The Dixie Cups consisted of two sisters Barbara Ann (born October 23, 1943) and Rosa Lee Hawkins (born September 24, 1944) and a cousin, Joan Marie Johnson (born January 15, 1945.), all from the Calliope housing project in New Orleans, Louisiana. Joe Jones, who was a record producer and singer in his own right, discovered the talented threesome and took them to New York.

The trio first sang together in grade school and by 1963 they had decided to pursue a musical career. They performed locally as The Meltones. Upon their departure for New York, they were going to be called Little Miss and the Muffets, but were named The Dixie Cups just prior to their first release.
