HELLO, I LOVE YOU, (WON'T YOU TELL ME YOUR NAME1
Words by: Jom Morrison
Music by: Robby Krieger, Ray Manczarek & John Densmore
Produced by: Paul A. Rothchild
Performed by: The Doors 23
First released: 4
Single: June 1968
Album: July 11, 1968
1 "Hello, I Love You" was the Doors' 2nd, and last, #1 hit in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100
chart selling over a million copies in the U.S. alone. The single also became the band's first big UK hit,
peaking at #15 on their chart. It also did well in other markets hitting #10 in Switzerland, #14 in the
Netherlands and #33 in Germany. Some pressings of the single list the title as "Hello, I Love You (Won't
You Tell Me Your Name?)," but the shorter version is far more common. The Doors were accused of
plagarizing the song's musical structure from the Kinks', "All Day and All of the Night," where a similar
riff is featured. Doors' guitarist and co-writer, Robby Krieger, according to the liner notes in the Doors
Box Set (Elektra 1997), denies that allegation, stating the song's vibe was taken from Cream's song,
"Sunshine of Your Love." According to drummer John Densmore, Morrison’s lyrical inspiration came
from a real incident involving a rare bout of shyness on Morrison's part, notably his inability to approach
a girl that he wanted to get to know, who ultimately became his muse.
