1 "Dawn (Go Away)" climbed the Billboard Hot 100 chart to #3 in February 1964,
but was prevented from going higher by the then-omnipresent, "I Want to Hold
Your Hand," and "She Loves You," and stayed at #3 for three weeks only to be
shunted to #6 by three other Beatles' songs, "Twist and Shout," "Please Please
Me," and "Can't Buy Me Love." The single version of "Dawn (Go Away)," with a
two-line sung introduction, was not recorded in true stereo. Early "stereo"
album releases were rechanneled (with the high and low frequencies on one
channel and the midrange on the other); later stereo issues 4 offer a different
take of the recording, beginning with a short drum intro, featuring a louder
drum backing and slightly different vocals.
2 Frankie Valli (lead tenor vocals, songwriting), Bob Gaudio (keyboards, tenor
vocals, songwriting), Tommy DeVito (lead guitar, baritone vocals) and Nick Massi
(bass guitar, bass vocals), were the original members of The Four Seasons. These
four were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group
Hall of Fame in 1999. There have been at least 30 different members of the Four
Seasons, or one of their various guises, over the years with Valli and Gaudio
the only constants. Jersey Boys, a musical play based on the lives of The Four
Seasons, directed by Des McAnuff premiered on Broadway on November 6, 2005 to
generally positive reviews and subsequently won multiple Tony Awards.
