I'd change her sad-rags into glad-rags, If I could (if I could). My folks won't let me, 'Cause they say that she's no good. She's a rag doll. Such a rag doll. Though I love her so, I can't let her know. Woo, ooo-ooo-ooo, ooo. (Woo, ooo, ooo.) Woo-ooo-ooo, ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo. ((Ahh, ahh-ahh-ahh, ahh.)) (Rag doll, ooo.) I love you just they way you are. 1 "Rag Doll," reached #1 on the US charts in July of 1964 and remained in the
top position for 2 weeks, quite an accomplishment during 1964, "the year of The
Beatles." According to songwriter, Bob Gaudio, the recording was inspired by the
activities of a young girl as he was stopped in traffic in Manhattan. As he
waited for the traffic signal to change, a dirty-faced girl proceeded to clean
the windshield of his automobile for some spare change. When Gaudio reached into
his wallet, he was surprised to find that all he had was currency, and none of
the bills were smaller than $10, so he gave the girl in tattered clothes a $10
bill. Her look of utter astonishment so haunted him that he, with a few tweaks
from Bob Crewe, wrote this song.
2 Frankie Valli (lead tenor vocals, songwriting), Bob Gaudio (keyboards, tenor
vocals, songwriting), Tommy DeVito (lead guitar, baritone vocals) and Nick Massi
(bass guitar, bass vocals), were the original members of The Four Seasons. These
four were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group
Hall of Fame in 1999. There have been at least 30 different members of the Four
Seasons, or one of their various guises, over the years with Valli and Gaudio
the only constants. Jersey Boys, a musical play based on the lives of The Four
Seasons, directed by Des McAnuff premiered on Broadway on November 6, 2005, to
generally positive reviews and subsequently won multiple Tony Awards.
3 Covered by: Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra; Gone Jakals; Jersey Babys; Brian
Poole & the Tremeloes; Quick; The Red Squares; Kevin Rowland; Del Shannon;
Steeleye Span; et al.
