1 "Walk Like a Man" was the Four Seasons' third consecutive #1 hit, initially
reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on March 2, 1963, it remained there
for three weeks. There is a story that during one of the recording sessions the
fire department received an emergency call from the Abbey Victoria Hotel, the
building that housed the Phillips Recording Studios. Producer, Bob Crewe, was
insisting that they get 'the perfect take.' As the group repeated their efforts,
smoke and water started seeping into the room, because the room directly above
the studio was on fire. Instead of evacuating, Crewe blocked the door and
continued recording until firefighters used their axes on it and pulled Crewe
and the rest of the musicians out.
2 Frankie Valli (lead tenor vocals, songwriting), Bob Gaudio (keyboards, tenor
vocals, songwriting), Tommy DeVito (lead guitar, baritone vocals) and Nick Massi
(bass guitar, bass vocals), were the original members of The Four Seasons. These
four were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group
Hall of Fame in 1999. There have been at least 30 different members of the Four
Seasons, or one of their various guises, over the years with Valli and Gaudio
the only constants. Jersey Boys, a musical play based on the lives of The Four
Seasons, directed by Des McAnuff premiered on Broadway on November 6, 2005, to
generally positive reviews and subsequently won multiple Tony Awards.
