The Penguins Earth Angel Lyrics:
(Woh-oh-oh-oh)
wa-ah-ah, (woh-oh-oh-oh.)
Earth angel, earth angel, will you be mine?
My darling dear, love you all the time.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
(Wa-ah-oh, wa-oh.)
Earth angel, earth angel (wa-oh-oh-oh),
The one I adore.
Love you forever and evermore.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
(Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo.)
I fell for you and I knew,
The vision of your love's loveliness.
I hope and I pray that someday,
I'll be the vision of your hap-happiness.
(Oh-oh-oh-oh, OH!)
Earth angel, earth angel (wa-oh-oh-oh),
Please be mine (ahhh).
My darling dear (ah), love you all the time.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
(Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo.)
I fell for you and I knew,
The vision of your loveliness.
I hope and pray that someday,
That I'll be the vision of your happiness.
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.)
Earth angel, earth angel (wa-oh-oh-oh),
Please be mine.
My darling dear, love you all the time.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.

[EARTH ANGEL [1] ]
[Written by: Jesse Belvin, Curtis "Fitz" Williams & Baynel Hodge. [2] ]
[Performed by: The Penguins [3] -1955 [4] ]
[Appears on: Earth Angel (45 RPM)-1955, Oldies But Goodies: Legendary
Hits-1979*, Back to the 50's-1986*, Earth Angel-1990, The Best of the

Street Corner Symphonies-2006* [5] , et al. (*Compilation of various artists.)]
[1] It was common practice at the time for radio stations to have segregated
playlists. Thus, "Earth Angel," was simultaneously recorded by the white
group, The Crew-Cuts, in 1955. The Crew-Cuts cover peaked at #3 on the Hot
100 chart, five spots higher than the Penguins version (However the Penguin's
version went to #1 on the R&B charts for 3 weeks running). The
Crew-Cuts' made a successful career of recording crossover-friendly covers
of R&B hits.]
[2] The writing credits have been a source of dispute for years. Some say
Curtis Williams AND Jessie Belvin wrote the lyrics, others say just Williams.
(Hodge composed the music.) To play it safe, I listed both Belvin & Williams
as lyricists.]
[3] The song was introduced and popularized by both the Penguins and the
Crew-Cuts in 1955 (see
[1] above). Other covers: Elvis Presley 1956, Bobby
Vee-1961, Johnny Tilotson-1962, Frankie Avalon-1964, The Four Seasons-1964,
The Tokens-1966, Sha Na Na-1971, Neil Sedaka-1983, Aaron Neville-1986, Human
Nature-1995, Slapstick-1997, et al.]
[4] Band Members:
Curtis Williams (December 11, 1934-August 10, 1979)-bass/baritone.
Cleveland Duncan (July 23, 1935)-tenor.
Dexter Tisby (March 10, 1935)-tenor.
Bruce Tate (January 27, 1937-June 20, 1973)-baritone.
The Penguins were one of a number of doo-wop groups of the period named after
birds (such as The Orioles, The Flamingos and The Crows). Bruce Tate smoked
Kool cigarettes, which, at the time, had "Willie the Penguin" as its cartoon
advertising character. They considered themselves "cool," and accordingly
decided to call themselves "The Penguins."]
