It is related from the point-of-view of a dock worker on a showboat and is the most famous song from the show. It is sung completely once by the black dock worker "Joe" who travels with the boat, and is re-sung three more times in brief reprises. The Ravens biography

The Ravens were one of the first, post-World War II, R&B groups, and first R&B groups named for birds. In both their musicality and their nomenclature, they influenced two generations of performers that followed, as well as sold lots of records in the process.

The Ravens originated with Jimmy Ricks (born 1924, in Jackson, Florida-died 1974 in New York, NY). In 1945, he was employed as a waiter at the Four Hundred Tavern and later at an establishment known as the L. Bar, both located in New York City's Harlem district. One of Ricks' co-workers and friend, Warren "Birdland" Suttles, would sing with him during moments when the work at the L. Bar wasn't too frantic. They sang to tunes by the Ink Spots,1 The Mills Brothers,2 the Delta Rhythm Boys,3 and other harmony groups whose music appeared on the club's jukebox but more often than not,.....MORE.....(full The Ravens biography)
