The Rolling Stones Brown Sugar Lyrics:
Gold coast, slave, ship bound for cotton fields,
Sold in a market down in New Orleans.
Scared old slaver knows he's doing alright,
Hear him whip the women just around midnight.
Brown sugar, how come you taste so good? Ah-ha.
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should, un-hunh.
Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot,
Lady of the house wonderin' where it's gonna stop.
House boy knows that he's doing alright,
You shoulda heard him just around midnight.
Brown sugar, how come you taste so good, now?
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should, now.
Yeah!
[Instrumental break.]
Ahhh, get along, brown sugar,
How come you taste so good, baby?
Ahhh, got me feelin' now, brown sugar,
Just like a black girl should, hey.
(I bet your mama was a tent show queen,)
(Had all the boyfriends at sweet sixteen.)
(I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like,)
(You shoulda heard me just around midnight.)
Brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ahh, brown sugar just like a young girl should, yeah.
I said yeah, yeah, yeah, woo!
How come ya, how come ya taste so good?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo!
Just like a, just like a black girl should.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo!
[Instrumental to end.]

[1] The song's subject matter has often been a point of controversy but its
popularity seemed to overshadow its scandalous lyrics, about taboo subjects,
including interracial sex, cunnilingus, slave rape, and less distinctly,
sadomasochism, lost virginity, and heroin use. An alternate version was
recorded after (or during) a birthday party for Richards. It features
appearances by Al Kooper on piano, and Eric Clapton on lead guitar. It also
features Richards singing the first verse, and loudly backing up the rest of
the song. The alternate version is widely available on bootleg recordings.
When the Stones perform "Brown Sugar" live, Jagger often changes the lyrics
from, "Just like a young girl should," to, "Just like a young man should" and
the line "Hear him whip the women just around midnight," is often changed to
the less offensive, "You shoulda heard him just around midnight." This can be
heard in their live albums, Love You Live, Flashpoint, Live Licks and Shine a
Light and even the version recorded at Richards' birthday party.

keyboards), Mick Taylor (guitars, backing vocals), Charlie Watts (drums,

[3] After recording "Brown Sugar," it took over a year for the song to be
released due to legal wranglings with the band's former label. However, the
Stones debuted the number live during the infamous concert at Altamont,
December 6, 1969, and sang it at other live concerts before the eventual
release date.
