(Oooo-oooo-oooooo.)
(Oooo-oooo-oooooo.)
(Oooo-oooo-oooooo.)
(Oooo-oooo-oooooo.)
Ooo, a storm is threat'ning my very life today.
If I don't get some shelter, oh, yeah, I'm gonna fade away.
War, children, it's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
War, children, it's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away. Yeah!
Ooo, see the fire is sweepin' our very street today.
Burns like a red, coal carpet, mad dog, lost its way.
War, children, it's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
War, children, it's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away. Yeah!
Instrumental break.
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
Rape, murder! Yeah-eah.
It's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
Rape, murder! Yeah.
It's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
Yay-yay-yay, yeah.
The flood is threat'ning my very life today.
Gimme, gimme shelter or I'm gonna fade away.
War, children, it's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
It's just a shot away.
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away.
It's just a kiss away,
It's just a kiss away,
It's just a kiss away,
It's just a kiss away,
Kiss away.

1This song first appeared as the opening track on the band's 1969 album,
Let It Bleed. Although the first word was spelt "Gimmie" on that album,
subsequent recordings by the band and other musicians have made "Gimme" the
customary spelling.
2Personnel, May 1969-December 1974: Mick Jagger (lead vocals, backup
vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitars, back up vocals), Mick Taylor4
(guitars, bass, synthesizer, percussion, backing vocals), Charlie Watts
(drums), Bill Wyman (bass), Nicky Hopkins (piano) and Jimmy Miller
(percussion). Some of the backup vocals, and even some of the lead vocals
were sung by African-American session singer, Merry Clayton, (misspelled on
the album as Mary), who was able to reach full, high notes that Mick Jagger
could not have. To date this effort remains one of the most prominent
contributions to a Rolling Stones track by a female vocalist.

4Mick Taylor replaced Brian Jones who was fired because of his heavy drug
use which rendered him unable to tour the U.S. during the summer of 1969.
Shortly thereafter, on July 2, 1969, he was found dead in the pool at his
home 50 miles southeast of London. It was reported that Jones had been
drinking wine and taking downers.
