The Turtles Elenore Lyrics:
You got a thing about you
I just can't live without you
I really want you, Elenore
Near me

Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, Elenore
Really

Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

I really think you're groovy
Let's go out to a movie
What do you say, now, Elenore
Can we?

They'll turn the lights way down low
Maybe we won't watch the show
I think I love you, Elenore
Love me

Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

Elenore, gee I think you're swell, ah, ah
Elenore, gee I think you're swell, ah, ah
Ah

1 Late in 1968, the Turtles' record company, White Whale, was applying pressure
on the band to try and retain their chart-topping success of the previous year
(with #1 hit "Happy Together"), wanting them to continue making formulaic pop
records that had been financially successful. One night Howard Kaylan, in a fit
of pique, and with the intention of creating the most banal pop song ever
written, dashed off "Elenore." He hoped it would show the "suits" at White
Whale just how out of touch these pop songs had become with the cultural world
of the late '60s. Kaylan figured the suits would realize the folly of their ways
and insist the Turtles finally get progressive which is what the band wanted to
do for some time. Unfortunately for Kaylan and the band, White Whale loved the
song, as did the record-buying public. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard
Hot 100 late in 1968.

2 The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, is a comedic, concept-album, on
which the group pretends to be different bands (with such names as, The Bigg
Brothers, Nature's Children, The U.S. Teens, featuring Raoul, & The Fabulous
Dawgs), each with a song in a different genre. The outer covers (on all but the
Rhino reissues) show the Turtles in evening dress, playing hosts of the "show,"
while the inside gatefold shows them in different costumes for each song. The
Turtles wrote nine of the 12 songs on the original LP, with the intention of
mocking the entire spectrum of popular music. There are two bonus tracks on the
Sundazed CD re-issue of 1994.

3 At the time of this recording the band lineup was: Howard Kaylan (lead
vocals), Mark Volman (guitar, saxophone, vocals), Al Nichol (guitar), Jim Pons
(bass guitar) and John Barbata (drums).

A couple of interesting side notes:
The group originally called themselves, The Crossfires from the Planet Mars, but
when they signed with White Whale Records, they changed their name to the
Tyrtles as a homage to the Byrds. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before they
discovered that people were struggling with the pronunciation of the name and
changed it again -- to the correct spelling of the word.

With the break-up of the Turtles in 1970, Kaylan and Volman joined the Mothers
of Invention (Frank Zappa's band) as "The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie," since the
use of the Turtles name (and even their own names) was prohibited by their
contract with White Whale. Flo & Eddie, as they soon became known, recorded
albums with the Mothers and later released a series of records on their own.
Frank Zappa claimed that his association with Kaylan and Volman was inspired by
a DJ's comment that Kaylan & Volman could make the Mothers as big as the
Turtles. "If you want to be as big as the Turtles, have a few Turtles in your
band," Zappa reportedly claimed. The collaboration with Zappa lasted until a
jealous fan attacked and seriously injured Zappa when the Mothers were
performing at the Rainbow Theatre in London in December 1971.

3a Covered by: Gene Bertoncini; Boy Wonder; Cinerama; Flo & Eddie; Larry Page;
Dean Torrence; et al.
