Woody Guthrie Froggie Went A-Courtin' Lyrics Information:

"FROGGIE WENT A-COURTIN'" 1
Written by: Traditional/Public Domain
Performed by: Woody Guthrie 2 3
First released 4 :
Single: None
Album: 1995 5

1 "Frog Went A-Courtin,'" which has a few alternative titles, is an English
language folk song. Its first known appearance is in Wedderburn's Complaynt of
Scotland (1548) under the name "The frog came to the myl dur." There is also a
reference in the London Company of Stationer's Register of 1580 to, "A Moste
Strange Weddinge of the Frogge and the Mouse." There are many texts of the
ballad, however the oldest known musical version is in Thomas Ravenscroft's
Melismata in 1611.

2 Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie, born July 14, 1912, died October 3, 1967, is
best known as an American singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose musical
legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads
and improvised works. His best known song is probably "This Land Is Your Land,"
which is regularly sung in American schools. Many of his recorded songs are
archived in the Library of Congress. He was probably the most important American
folk music artist of the first half of the 20th century, in part because he
turned out to be such a major influence on the popular music of the second half
of the 20th century.

3 Covered by:
Red Allen,
Bob Dylan,
The Stan Getz Quartet,
Burl Ives (performed perhaps the most well-known version),
John "Spider John" Koerner,
Tex Ritter,
Pete Seeger,
Bruce Springsteen,
Doc Watson,
The Wonder Kids Choir,
et al.

et al.

* This list is not intended to be the complete discography
on which this song appears.

5 I'm sure there are earlier recorded versions of Woody Guthrie's "Froggie Went
A-Courtin'" but 1995 was the first one to which I could find a reference.

6 Barrel outroar refers to Froggie shooting his pistol.

7 It seems strange that Guthrie says the moth is the first to come inasmuch as
the lady bug was already the first to come, but that is what he says.
